You Were There

   I needed someone to share

        A vict’ry, a smile, to say “I care.”

To see my act as a conquered goal,

To understand the intent of my soul.

You were there.

        I needed someone to know

That anyone can sink as low

As someone else in this world we’re in

And love me still in spite of my sin.

You were there.

        I needed someone to see

The pain, the shame inside of me

As passing marks of an uphill climb

And know I’d change with the help of time.

You were there.

        I needed someone to live

And in the force of life to give

Me life and joy: a desire to try

And set my sights on the highest high.

You were there.

        I needed someone to hear

The pounding heart, the stifled tear

The things I felt but could not say

And yet, you heard them anyway

‘Cause you were there.
